Tips to prevent athlete's foot
|
It's not possible to completely eliminate your chances of catching athlete's foot because the fungal infection is just too common. But you can lower the odds by following some simple rules.
- Wash your feet daily. By keeping your feet clean, you give fungi less chance to grow.
- Dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes. Fungi love warm, damp places. Keeping your feet dry takes its ideal growth environment away.
- Avoid wearing tight footwearwhether that's socks or shoesespecially in the summer. Sandals are the best footwear for warm weather.
- Wear socks made of cotton, which is a breathable fabric. Avoid synthetic materials, which tend to trap sweat and dampness next to your skin.
- Dust your shoes with antifungal powder.
- Clean bathroom mats and the bathroom floor regularly. Fungi tend to lurk there because of the damp, warm environment. By cleaning regularly, you lessen your chance of catching athlete's foot or passing it on.
